POCATELLO — The Portneuf Valley Audubon Society will have a field trip to see strutting Sage Grouse on Saturday and the birds of Nicaragua will be the topic of its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. April 19 at the Marshall Public Library.

For the early morning field trip, Idaho State University Emeritus Professor of Ornithology Chuck Trost will lead this planned half-day trip to visit a Sage Grouse lek below Rockland and then head south to Malad and stop at reservoirs, including Devil’s Creek, to enjoy migrating Common Loons.

To participate in the field trip, meet at 5:30 a.m. in the lower ISU Campus parking lot by the Bison Sculpture behind the Idaho Museum of Natural History Building. Participants are encouraged to bring a snack and a friend.

At the PVAS monthly meeting, Trost will present a slide show about the Birds, Flora and Fauna of Nicaragua, a surprisingly beautiful Central American country that has settled down since its troubles in the 1990s. Trost found seven new species for his life list, and now has more than 5,200 species on his life list of birds he has spotted around the world.

He also looked down into an active volcano at dusk, toured a mangrove swamp and caught a 35-pound yellow-finned tuna in the Pacific.
