LOGAN, Utah — A man with a concealed carry permit reportedly shot a pit bill as it attacked his dog at a northern Utah park last weekend.

According to Capt. Tyson Budge of the Logan Police Department, the man had been playing with his Labrador retriever off leash at the Ray Hugie Hydro Park last Saturday afternoon when another dog owner arrived with two pit bulls.

Police said words were exchanged between the two dog owners, and the Lab owner retrieved a leash from his truck for his dog.

Soon after, the pit bulls reportedly became aggressive and went after the Lab. Both pit bills were on leashes, but their owner was unable to control them, Budge said.

There is no indication that the attack was provoked.

In the midst of the melee, the Lab owner told police he tried to break up the dog fight. When one of the pit bulls tried to bite him, he pulled out his gun and fired off multiple rounds in an attempt to scare off the other dogs.

Budge said one of those rounds hit one of the pit bulls in the shoulder.

The owner scooped up the pit bull and immediately took it to a vet, and the dog is expected to make a full recovery.

Police say they are not able to release additional information until after the Cache County Attorney’s Office completes its review.
