MERIDIAN — An employee of the West Ada School District has been terminated after posting social media videos that show her celebrating the killing of Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, a conservative activist, was assassinated Wednesday during a speaking gig at Utah Valley University.

Multiple news outlets have reported that the former employee’s name is Annika Rutz and that she was an assistant cheerleading coach at Meridian High School. A video that has been posted online shows Rutz, wearing a “Meridian Warriors” T-shirt, saying she hopes “he’s dead.”

“I just saw the (expletive) video, looks like he got shot in the neck and chest,” Rutz said in the recording, referring to videos of Kirk being shot that have circulated the internet. “I mean, I’m not saying I wish death upon someone, but that’s what I’m (expletive) saying. I hope he’s dead. Is that going to get me arrested?”

After the video circulated, the West Ada School District on Thursday announced on its social media accounts that Rutz was no longer in their employment.

“Please know that West Ada does not endorse or condone the video in any way,” the post reads. “The matter was addressed immediately upon being brought to our attention. After review, it was determined that the employee’s conduct violated school and district policy. As a result, Miss Rutz’s employment with West Ada School District has been terminated.”

The district’s human resources office told the Idaho Press that Rutz’s employment was terminated because her actions violated district Policy 913, which contains multiple subsections governing employee use of social media.

Rutz had previously been a cheerleader herself at Meridian High, where she graduated in 2024, according to an Instagram post dated May 10 last year from a photographer who took her senior photos.

A Facebook profile for Rutz had been taken down as of Thursday afternoon, while a LinkedIn profile identified Rutz as a Boise State University finance student with a planned graduation date of 2027.

Boise State University has not provided a comment.
